Older Fours & Fives

At this level, children are beginning to be more interested in the answers to the questions they ask. They are thinking about things, and drawing their own conclusions. The process of critical thinking is taking shape. They are more aware of others, and have a strong need to belong to the group. They are very physical as well, and more able to handle fine motor tasks. Mastery is very important at this level, and they will focus a great deal of time and energy toward accomplishing a goal. They are very proud of their accomplishments, and enjoy sharing them with others.

We have chosen an interest/learning center environment for this age group. Hands on exploration and discovery are encouraged through age appropriate interest centers. Children choose from a variety of activities that will expose them to the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and touches of our world. Teachers facilitate learning by providing language to give meaning to experiences. Small group interaction and skills practice activities focus on specific skills. Music and movement and Bible time are featured daily. This program will lay a strong foundation for whole language, pre-reading, pre-writing, pre-math, science and personal / social growth and awareness.

All activities are designed to promote brain development necessary for personal, social, and academic success.

Students will be given the opportunities to:

Explore:

  • explore pre-math and science concepts through hands on experimentation.
  • explore pre-reading concepts through phonemic awareness activities.
  • explore cultural diversity, and grow in personal and social awareness, through large and small group activities and dramatic play.

Express:

  • express themselves creatively through daily art experiences. The students will be exposed to a wide variety of materials and mediums with self expression being the goal.

Develop:

  • develop pre-writing skills through fine motor activities, with access to a variety of writing materials.
  • develop comprehension and listening skills through literature and listen/respond activities.
